The moral of the story?It pays to find out for yourself if something is 'better'or not! To say I was surprised would be an understatement!I proceeded to follow the same routine with a half dozen identical 24/96 downloads & in EVERY case the WMP either bettered the jRiver or equaled it!I also noted a problem playing several 24/96 Files with WMP after downloading jRiver & they would NOT play again until I DELETED jRiver! There was NO denying it,WMP CLEARLY showed a wider sound stage,more focused imaging as well as a touch more warmth & BETTER RESOLUTION!With WMP the arena's size was better portrayed through the amount of reverb cleanly heard. I started with the Free jRiver download.Once the Library was imported I pulled up WMP for a back & forth comparison.įirst track used is the opening 40 seconds of Rush'Farewell To Kings'on the Live Different Stages 3 cd set.The opening 40 seconds has Alex on a Classical Guitar,with a rowdy crowd,especially 3 individuals in different sections of the arena that are whistling at an unbelievably loud level.I listened to these 40 seconds 3 times straight on jRiver then switched over to WMP & played the same 40 seconds 3 times straight then back to jRiver for 3 & so forth until I had done this 10 times. So I got the idea in my head after trying some 24/96KHz.Downloads that I wanted to try DSD & 24/192KHz.downloads & streaming.Since WMP only supports up to 24/96KHz.& EVERYONE says jRiver & FooBar(who support DSD) are better players I decided to find out.
